Using Microsoft Excel for statistics

Adding multiple data in excel

Initial considerations

The following should be ready for you to start your calculations and initial part of data handling in excel:

  • Enter data
  • Within the first row should contain your data heading - parameters
  • Next fill identifiers in the first column and then the numbers to be calculated below the relevant columns

Initial row should look something like Serial number, Number of hospital visits, number of prescriptions and Total

Now lets handle the addition aspect of data

To add

  1. Using the mouse, click the cursor in the window underTotal column of your data array within the initial row to be calculated
  2. Press = on your keyboard
  3. Move the cursor onto the first number to be calculated, then left click on this number
  4. Press + on your keyboard
  5. Press cursor on the second number in the same row; then left click

  6. >>>You should see a sustained selection of the relevant numbers to be added

  7. Now hit the enter/return key on your keyboard

  8. This will reveal your answer for the row

  9. To automatically reveal (calculate) answers to the other numbers in your sheet: do the following:
  • Left click the result of your initial addition
  • Hover with the cursor till the large + sign turns smaller (this is usually on the right side of the excel box)
  • Sustain a left click and drag down your mouse till the last row you want to be included in the calculation is reached; then let go of the click

>>> You will see that the Total column would have automatically generated answers!
